The American healthcare system allocates significantly greater financial resources than other developed nations; however, its health outcomes, particularly life expectancy, remain notably lower. Despite continuous advancements in medical technology and increased spending, the system faces persistent challenges related to cost efficiency, accessibility, and overall effectiveness. This study investigates the long-term trajectory of healthcare expenditures as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), identifying key drivers behind the rising costs and assessing the critical juncture at which intervention may be necessary to curb this unsustainable trend. To provide a comprehensive analysis, this research employs advanced machine learning methodologies, including Random Forest and Support Vector Regression (SVR), alongside traditional statistical forecasting models. By integrating these approaches, the study aims to enhance predictive accuracy and uncover patterns that might be overlooked through conventional methods alone. The findings offer valuable insights into the future dynamics of healthcare spending, highlighting the potential economic and policy implications of continued growth in expenditures. Furthermore, this study underscores the crucial role of healthcare analytics in deciphering systemic inefficiencies and informing evidence-based decision-making. Understanding these trends is essential for policymakers, healthcare administrators, and economists seeking to implement effective strategies that balance cost containment with quality care. The research ultimately emphasizes the urgency of data-driven policy interventions to address the escalating financial and public health challenges posed by the current trajectory of healthcare spending in the United States.
This study explores the adoption of reusable transit packaging in the U.S. aerospace, machinery, and automotive industries, focusing on current perceptions, barriers, and strategies for broader implementation. Using surveys, interviews, and a literature review, we find that packaging choices are critical for sustainability goals. Key obstacles include limited policies, complexity, capacity constraints, and cost. Organizations already using reusable packaging are likely to expand, underscoring the importance of both internal motivation and external drivers (e.g., regulations, industry initiatives). Furthermore, we highlight the role of stakeholder collaboration in knowledge sharing and technology adoption. This collaboration can align environmental objectives with cost-effectiveness, promoting standardized approaches that benefit the entire supply chain. Finally, we propose a policy- and technology-driven framework to address these challenges, offering a roadmap to accelerate the transition to reusable packaging and advance global sustainability objectives.
The presentation deals with Higher Education Institutions (HEI) role in climate change (CC) mitigation in relation to other key societal actors. The presentation draws from a book “Higher Education Policy for Tackling Climate Change – Drivers, Dynamics and Effects” (Palgrave MacMillan, 2025), edited by Jouni Kekäle and Rómulo Pinheiro, investigating the roles of HEIs in tackling CC through nine country cases, written by 20 researchers from around the world. Prior and subsequent works are also used in argumentation. Different national policies appear to reflect diverse expectations on HEIs role in CC mitigation. This is discussed through UK’s and the Netherland’s contrasting policy approaches (Kekäle, Cristofoletti & Pinheiro, in the book). In the Netherlands HEIs are expected to have a more central ‘policy implementor’ role in CC mitigation, whereas in the UK this is done in a more indirect and less substantive manner, by scientific intermediary bodies aiding parliamentary steering towards those who cause the emissions. Most emissions come from utilization of fossil fuels in the energy sector: these have increased. Political steering of HEIs as publicly funded institutions is relatively easy, but HEIs don’t have the resources nor direct power to steer industry towards net zero. Companies appear to lack incentives for reducing their emissions (the oil and gas industries invested only 2.5% of their total capital into clean energies in 2022). Effective CC mitigation needs strong political steering, corporate efforts, demand by citizens and innovations from HEIs. HEIs sometimes claim to take a leading or even sole role in CC mitigation but such role might make policymakers, industries and citizenry to take a backseat in approaching the wicked issue. That would be counterproductive. There already are working solutions and innovations tend to take decades to penetrate society. Still, at present, for example, critical carbon removal processes and decarbonization technologies are neither sufficient nor scalable enough. It is argued that HEIs play an important supportive or developmental role in CC mitigation but effective cooperation between societal sectors is crucial.
